Time to Relax

Thanks to my anxiety, I have trouble sleeping at night. It can take me hours to fall asleep, and even then, I still wake up throughout the night. I once got a great piece of advice from a good friend, and that was to not try to sleep, but RELAX and let myself sleep. And while it made sense, the struggle for me was that I have a very hard time relaxing.

I overthink pretty much everything in my life, which makes it hard to find something to help me relax. My friends and family would give me suggestions on things I could try, but like a lot of things, relaxing is very personal, and the options they suggested did not really help.

So you have to find what makes YOU relax. For me, one big thing that helps me relax is, going for a walk. Being outside, with the wind in my hair and great music in my ears, is a great way for me to release all the tension in my body and the bad thoughts in my head. The problem is though, that most of the time, I’m very anxious at night, and it is probably not the best idea to go walking alone late at night.

Instead, I will usually watch a movie or turn on the TV. I used to read off my ipad or laptop, but there were too many things that could take over my attention, like social media, which is usually part of the reason why I can’t relax in the first place. I don’t have a DVD player in my apartment, so watching a movie on my laptop, is a good way to make sure I’m not surfing the web. Plus, I leave my phone in my bedroom and go out and watch in the living room, so I don’t have a lot of distractions.

If there is something that is weighing on your mind that is stopping you from relaxing, then talking to someone could be a big help. I suggest making a phone call, but texting someone can work as well. As long as there is someone you trust on the other end to listen to you! Even if they don’t say much, sometimes just getting things off your chest and saying them out loud, is all you need to feel better.

Relaxing is a tricky thing to do when you’re anxious. You try to clear your head, but your thoughts just don’t shut up. Trust me I know, but when you find the things that makes you relax, you’ll be thankful you tried!

Until next time!
